I'm still very new to the game, I leveled to about 50 before buying a couple of dlcs and boosting myself to 80 a little while later, and I've read that its better to craft the ascended gear yourself rather than buy them from the vault, just on gold value alone, but like, its costing me maybe 3 gold to craft maybe 50 copper ingots, and crafting with those barely gets me a level in the crafting level stuff, I'm really struggling to see how this is at all cheaper than losing out on the 50 gold equivilent in astral currency (gold=8, ascended armour=400, 400/8=50). that being said I am very new so im probably missing something, tbh I dont even know what I'd need ascended gear for yet, I've only fought maybe two world bosses and with how many high level players tend to join in, I've been getting by just fine with the exotics i've gotten from drops.
