On May 3, in Vladivostok, our national territory occupied by Russia, a children’s parade event themed “Successors of Victory” was held to commemorate the 81st anniversary of the Soviet victory in the Great Patriotic War. In addition to Russian local students, first-grade elementary school students from mainland China and Laos were also invited to participate. This was also the first time that children from mainland China had participated in this special event.
Vladivostok was originally our national territory. Due to the Convention of Peking in 1860, together with another 400,000 square kilometers of land east of the Ussuri River, it was ceded by the Qing government to Tsarist Russia, and this situation has continued to the present day. In addition to losing land territory, China also lost its largest island, Sakhalin, as well as access to the Sea of Japan. From that point onward, Heilongjiang and Jilin became inland provinces. Tsarist Russia renamed “Haishenwai” to “Vladivostok,” which in Russian means “Conquer the East.”
On March 10, 1926, our party convened the “Anti-Russian Support for Overseas Chinese Conference” at the Third Auditorium of Peking University to support our overseas Chinese compatriots in Russia. Since Soviet Russia implemented communism, it had relentlessly exploited our overseas Chinese in Russia and even treated human life with utter disregard. Among the worst atrocities was the murder of the entire family of Jin Shisheng, former president of the General Association of Overseas Chinese in Russia.
A hundred years have passed. The voices of our party’s predecessors condemning Soviet Russia still ring in our ears, yet who could have imagined that one hundred years later, there would be a group of adults who forget their ancestors and heritage, bringing ignorant children onto this land soaked with the blood of countless Chinese compatriots. This is behavior that forgets one’s roots and betrays one’s nation and homeland; it is an act of disregarding national humiliation and desecrating the memory of compatriots who died tragic deaths!
To forget history is equivalent to betrayal. Our party strongly condemns this. Our party hopes that our fellow compatriots will never forget the immense disasters Tsarist Russia brought upon our nation, and that this history will be properly passed down, so as to console the spirits of our compatriots who died tragically.

After the end of World War I, the Paris Peace Conference was convened to reshape the postwar order. The Republic of China, as one of the victorious powers, hoped that Qingdao—leased out in the late Qing period—would be returned. Although our delegation argued forcefully on just grounds, the conference ultimately decided to transfer sovereignty over Qingdao to Japan, provoking strong public outrage.
On May 4, 1919, more than 3,000 students gathered at Tiananmen Square, marking the official beginning of the May Fourth Movement. As the movement expanded, patriotic citizens burned Japanese goods, boycotted them, and even beat so-called “traitorous officials” and sent them to the hospital. For a time, a surge of patriotic sentiment swept across more than 200 cities of all sizes nationwide.
In June of the same year, the Beiyang Government, under pressure, chose to compromise and granted the delegation the authority to handle the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. Although the delegation proposed that the treaty should include provisions abolishing the unequal treaties between China and Germany, this was rejected by the conference. In the end, our delegation refused to sign the Treaty of Versailles.
The May Fourth Movement was one of the largest patriotic movements in Chinese history, with profound and far-reaching impact. It promoted the development of the New Culture Movement, and the founding of both our party and the Chinese Communist Party were influenced by it. The Shandong issue was eventually resolved after the signing of agreements such as the Sino-German Agreement, the Treaty for the Settlement of the Shandong Question, and the Nine-Power Treaty.
The spirit of the May Fourth Movement lies in the refusal of patriotic youth to sit idly by when the nation is bullied, and in their willingness to take concrete action to save the country. Our party believes that, in today’s world of U.S.–mainland confrontation, political polarization, and various social challenges, we should revive the May Fourth spirit and strive for the rejuvenation of the nation.
