Transmission Fluid Question

I’m trying to help an elderly friend who has a language barrier, so I’ve been acting as the go-between with the dealer and wanted to get some input from people more familiar with Toyota Highlanders.

She has a 2021 Toyota Highlander with about 42,000 miles that she bought used from a Toyota dealer. She recently brought it in for service, and the dealer asked whether the transmission fluid had ever been changed within the last 5 years. Since we don’t know the history, they recommended a transmission fluid service.
What confused me was the explanation they gave. The technician told me that on this “older” 2021 model, there is supposedly no way to check the transmission fluid level or condition without “cracking open” the transmission in a way that would cause fluid to come out. They said newer models have a way to check fluid without doing this, but not this one.

I’m trying to figure out whether:

  1. This is legitimate and Toyota really designed these transmissions this way

+

  1. I’m misunderstanding what they mean by “cracking it open”
  2. Or whether this is potentially an upsell / scare tactic to squeeze more out of a routine oil change

The whole thing felt a little like Schrödinger’s transmission fluid. Apparently the only way to know whether the fluid is okay is to open something up, which would ironically cause the fluid to leak out and CREATE the need for a fluid replacement?

What made me even more conflicted is that I asked ChatGPT while this was happening, and it told me there IS a procedure to check the transmission fluid on these sealed Toyota transmissions using a check plug and a temperature-based process, without doing anything drastic.

The dealer wanted to charge around $330 for the service/check.

So I wanted to ask:
Is the dealer correct about the 2021 Highlander specifically?

Is there actually a way to check fluid level/condition on this model without major disassembly?

At ~42k miles, would you even do a transmission fluid service yet?

If service/checking is needed, can this be done reliably by a trusted local mechanic, or is this something that really should be done only at Toyota?

Appreciate any advice. I’m just trying to stee an elderly person away from being taken advantage of.
