Small deck question, is this a safe way to secure a pole?

Visiting my sister and wondering what the experts think of the way in which the poles supporting the stairs are connected to the floor (which is also a deck).

About a 3 foot section of the ridge cap/vent at my parents house blew (or was ripped) off. They are expecting heavy rain over the next couple of days.

Is there anything we can do from the inside for the rain until we are able to get a repair man out to fix it?
