Is it necessary to read the HP books?

Hello!

I accidentally fell into reading Dramione last autumn and like many, Manacled was my gateway drug. I’m a millennial so Harry Potter was culturally embedded in my childhood and teen years, but I wasn’t really a fan. All of my knowledge comes from the films and some I’ve only seen once maybe 15 years ago.

This hasn’t really gotten in the way of being able to enjoy Dramione but I’ve mostly stuck to post-war, 20/30s tropes. I really want to read Lionheart and Detraquee but they both take place during Hogwarts years for parts, if I’m not mistaken.

So my question is, is it essential to read the HP books to better appreciate or understand fics like the ones mentioned? For context, I would not need to buy the books.

Finally, thank you to each and every author. You have no idea how much joy your writing brings :)
