I'm a vintage gaming enthusiast. I recently acquired a Japanese Nintendo Game Boy DMG-01 set and I'd like a second opinion on the authenticity of the outer box.
Here's a quick summary of what I have:
- Console: DMG-01 Japan, serial G05566960, Made in Japan label intact
- Warranty card pink, with matching serial G05566960 and a Japanese retailer stamp
- Small reminder card (DMG-690200): present
- Inner styrofoam tray: with embossed "DMG" lettering, naturally yellowed
- Outer box: Japanese version, © 1989 Nintendo, Made in Japan, JAN barcode T4902370500851, VCI mark, "For sale and use in Japan only" disclaimer
The console, warranty and styrofoam look authentic to me. My doubts are specifically about the outer box for two reasons:
On the inner flaps (top and bottom) there is a clearly printed marking "(REV.2)" in Western characters. I haven't been able to find any documentation of this marking on original Nintendo Japan DMG-01 boxes from 1989-1990, and it doesn't match the typical Japanese lot/date codes I'd expect to find there.
The purple print on the box surface is completely flat, with no perceptible ink relief even under raking light. The dashed lines have very crisp edges, which feels closer to modern digital offset than to the spot-color Pantone offset lithography used by Nintendo at that time.
I suspect this might be a "Frankenstein CIB": authentic console with matching paperwork, but a modern reproduction box. I'd really appreciate your expert opinion before I either keep it as is or hunt for an original Japanese box to complete the set properly.
