Sound Quality

I feel like the harder I try to improve my SQ, the worse it gets. Is this just how it is? Can anyone relate?

My first car was a Hyundai with infinity soundsystem, I felt it was the epitome of sound quality. My next car, I went crazy on SPL with no regard for SQ. Thought it sounded amazing with a crappy set of Taramps and kicker subs/coaxials ran off a Chinese headunit.

With my current build, I’ve been focusing on SQ. I decided to use a kicker key because I had initially planned on a budget build, and had never used a DSP before so figured it should be a huge improvement. I’ve traded through probably 10 sets of door woofers and dash 3.5” widebands/coaxials, and nothing sounds good to me.

I spent a lot of effort prepping the car on my initial install, so I have plenty of bass and quite frankly amazing midbass, but the clarity between the guitar-voice-hi hat just seems impossible to get right. I’m almost considering ditching the larger dash speakers and putting simple tweeters in their place because I’ve never felt like I’ve had these issues, but the other half of me feels like now I’m just being overly-critical on every listening aspect and it probably sounds great to anyone else.

Anyone have similar experiences?
