I love a bright airy clean midcentury style but I feel like my dark wood trim is ruining any hope of that. I’ve noticed in all my inspo photos, there’s either NO trim or painted trim. I don’t feel like I can do that to my home…. But I also feel so stuck. How would you fix this room? Is it possible to get the look I want or is my dark wood trim a curse? Should I just go for a more vintage cozy vibe even though that isn’t really the style I like?

This room is attached to our kitchen and functions as a hosting space and play room. This picture is taken from the dining room and the downstairs is open concept, long and narrow. From the front entrance, you walk in to a living room and can see through the dining room back to here.

What I’m really here to say, though, is this rug sucks. It was free and it sheds and it is not doing me any favors. I feel like I can’t fix anything else in this room until I get a rug in here that works better but I’ve been looking for months now and I feel totally mystified. I’d shell out for a nicer rug if I knew it would work, but I just have no confidence in my ability to pick the right one. People of the internet, can you help me find a rug and/or fix this room!?
