“I Never Understood That… You Don’t Look Mormon”

Got to talking with a longtime acquaintance at the gym and it came up that I used to be Mormon. And pretty recently, too! I’m coming up on 4 years out.

She said something I’m getting very used to hearing — “I never would have guessed that you were Mormon.”

In many ways, I actually have the markers of Mormonism to the well-trained eye. I’m pretty young to be an empty nester. My aesthetic is relatively conservative. I’m afraid of confrontation and quick to just smile bigger and brighter in tricky situations.

But for some reason, I don’t get clocked as Mormon. Perhaps since my dad was a convert? I never felt like I fit in as a Mormon kid, looks wise. And I’ve lived primarily in blue states, which also puts me outside the Morridor.

Lots of threads to tease out. What makes a person seem Mormon to you? I’m interested in your takes.
