I (mid 40sF) have a friend I have known since high school. We don't hang out or call but we do text each other.

A few weeks ago during a chat they mentioned having lost their job. I expressed concern and they assured me it would be fine, they got severance pay, etc. They said they were taking time off but didn't think it be hard to find a new job.

Two days later we were texting again when they casually mentioned how tired they were and how glad they were that it was the end of their week since they only work 4 day weeks now.

I was confused by this apparent lie and didn't know how to respond. I eventually said something about thinking he was taking time off and he said probably soon.

That was the last thing we said to each other. It's been weeks and every time I look at our texts I see the 2 opposing statements staring me in the face and can't bring myself to say anything at all. It just feels weird now.

So, WIBTA if I just didn't reach back out after they probably lied to me?
