Breadcrumbs: A one-word collaborative storytelling game for 2–6 players
Hey everyone. I came up with a social storytelling game called Breadcrumbs!
In Breadcrumbs, players take turns adding one word at a time, called a crumb (but you can just call it a word if you want), to create a story together.
The game is designed for 2–6 players, though it can work with larger groups as well.
How to Play
- Choose a turn order.
- Optional: Choose a genre, such as fantasy, horror, mystery, or comedy.
- On your turn, say only one word. However, you can include punctuation in your turn and it still counts. For example, “it, comma” is a valid move.
- Players continue building the story until they decide to end it.
- Players may also say punctuation aloud when needed (for example, “comma” or “period”).
Ending the Story
To end the story, one player says “The” and the next player says “End.”
Example Round
1: Jamal
2: Hates
3: Caterpillars
1: Because
2: One
3: Ate
1: His
2: Hamburger, period.
1: The
2: End.
Why I Like the Idea
Simple enough to explain in seconds
Requires no materials
Portable
Can be played in person or over text
Creates a different story every round
I’d love feedback:
- Does a game like this already exist under another name?
- What rules or variations would you suggest?
- Does this sound like something you’d actually play?
