I work in the bakery for a Sam's Club Location. I have been pulled aside (no formal action or notes, just a conversation) about putting too many details into our cake notes. I get it, we're not a specialty bakery and graduations are making things hectic. I have dialed back what I will offer members majorly.
Today I was pulled aside again for the same issue, but this has pissed me off.
My 'too many details'?, changing the bottom border to a different color, and specifying that the message is broken up between an image.
The notes were, verbatim; 'Change bottom border to red. Put -in loving memory- above customer image, and rest of message below image.'
So when I decide to push back, im told "the decorators see the spec cake shown, and with so many things happening in the notes they cant catch everything. So they do the cake to the image/spec"
I defend myself. It's my problem the cake decorators dont read. What about the change costs us more time? Nothing.
The decorators cant even look at the spec half the dang time because it doesn't load on our tablets.
Shift lead then says she refuses to argue abt this and tells me to speak to the manager if I have an issue.
Am I crazy??? Like, im not asking too much right??? It's ONE COLOR. And im trying to HELP the decorators make the members happy.
God there's SO MUCH. I could say about this bakery regarding its Biblical Levels of Sloth, this is just today's First issue.
Upd and Additional notes:
Did end up speaking to the manager about this when she stopped by, and she was 100% on my side. There was a miscommunication about liscenced cakes and Corporate-owned cakes.
But reading through some comments did reveal that yes, we're supposed to do spec and spec only. At our Sam's location, we've been told that as long as the technique is in the book we can use it on a custom.
I have told members before to go to a specialty cake store for some very detailed cakes. Now that I know that ALL the designs should be treated as liscened I'll use that to help tell members 'no'
Thanks for the correction! :P
