Monster Connections and Lake of Tears
I have been loving this reddit. I have a lot of thoughts and would love people’s theories and thoughts about how things connect. Spoilers for Season four up to the most recent episode (2) because the MiY needs to be talked about.
Townies - These are the monsters that we are the most familiar with. The OG’s.
What we know: They come out at night and look human just before they kill. They used to scream all night but after the talisman’s they whisper. They can run, seen when Smiley kills Miranda but they don’t usually; implied that they don’t need to run because there is no way out. Season 3 finale revealed that the monsters were created when they made a deal with a dark force for eternal life. Likely it was the MiY who made this pact and if not then probably a power higher than the MiY. Tabitha and Jade had children in a past life who became part of the sacrifice for immortality. The roots of the tree becoming the symbol and we all know the rest.
Question: Do you think the Townies were stuck in Fromville when they made the pact or did their actions create Fromville. I like to think it is the former and if you do too my final theory I’m building too is supported by this thinking.
Theory 1: Crows = Townies
Townies seem to sleep all day in the caves, it seems they cannot be in the sunlight, or they need sleep themselves and choose night time as the best time to hunt. Despite being occupied in the caves sleeping all day, they have crazy insight into the town, the people, and their actions. I think that the crows, which we see on the tree every time someone enters and throughout the town, are the Townies watching during the day (think GoT and Bran). >!A new detail to support this theory of the crows is that I do not believe there are any crows in sight on the scene where we see the new priest arrive in S4E1, likely because the MiY was already on site.!<
What do you think? Are the Townies the crows during the day?
Kimono woman - we know they communicate through the Polaroid camera. Some relation to the townies pact as she helps keep up the bargain of immortality by being the one to help bring back Smiley. I don’t know if we will get much more on her as that may just be her created purpose by whatever the townies made a deal with.
Theory 2: Kimono woman plays the role of bringing more than just the town monsters into Fromville. Could she be related to the worms/ music box monster? Someone had to have put Martin where he was, was it the Kimono woman acting through someone to keep the worms at bay knowing they could kill (if only temporarily) one of the town monsters?
Spiders?
Season one when Boyd and Sarah are exploring before they come across ruins we see spider webs, I used to think the were the different sounding monster at the log village where the found crops last season but now idk.
Theory 3: Maybe the worms with the music box produce silk? Any thoughts or connections to spiders please share them!
Music Box / Ballerina / Worms
Music box monster that was the first new big addition in Season 2 that tormented the town after Martin died and shared his blood with Boyd. The worms have the power to destroy one of the towns monsters so power wise we can surmise that the music box entirely is “stronger” than the townies. Now I could be entirely mistaken to assume that the music box and the accompanying ballerina are the same entity as the word themselves, if anyone has another idea please share.
MiY
He is likely the big bad of the whole place and mystery however I would be happy if there was one more stage of evil to Fromville. He is the voice on tv radio tha talked to Jim and saw Tabitha digging to follow the wires. There are many great theories connecting him to the King in Yellow which I totally see, the idea of being dead once you’ve heard the story and how that translates to being doomed once to get to the town are awesome. >!The MiY can shape-shift but seems to need to have an item of someone’s to do this. They seem to be able to story walk or at the very least we know they are aware of it to some degree with Julie (I think)!< I could go on about the MiY but others already have much better so to the next possible connection…
Theory 4 MiY is a rival or creator of the Music Box Entity
In the most recent episode the MiY checks out the storage room and has a line about people’s stories and memory being left in those items, I think this is an incredibly important detail. But on another note in the same scene the MiY lingers looking at a ballerina figure which looks like the same monster Boyd saw previously when the music would play. I wonder if the MiY is above (not in charge but at a higher awareness or power in the town) all other entities or if he is in competition of the same resource, trapped souls.
Theory 5: Lake of Tears

At first I thought it could be him trapped after the kitchen incident in episode 1, but once he told his son to go find the Lake of Tears instead of sticking to the family focus it became clear, at least to me, that this is something like the MiY manipulating the people to do something. What if all the monsters are connected, with MiY potentially but not necessarily at the top. What if all the monsters rise from the Lake of Tears. Metaphorically they are created of tears - despair and fear - which has been a theory already about being related to the creation of the things the people fear manifesting. What if there is something evil in the Lake of Tears, potentially the MiY, which always wanted Ethan/ kids, since it drove Sarah to try and kill him. Now Ethan could be headed to the heart of the evil which may try to convince him he can save everyone and ultimately be making a deal which would create a new monster. The deal could be for Ethan do something in return for his dad coming back and the Townie monsters disappearing. But the lake twists this and brings Jim back as a worse monster which causes the Townies to stay in the caves permanently but makes life for the towns folk worse as talismans won’t protect them from the new monster. (I don’t think that is actually what is going to happen but I am trying to demonstrate how I think that lake my work in taking wises and hopes and testing them).!<

Sorry it’s long. Not everything is important but every detail can in fact matter (>!shout out to the old theory of Julie being the shape Boyd shot at in the distance)!< but the show is also full of red herrings so everything does not need to connect but just maybe it will.
