How to handle people constantly bringing up my appearance negatively?
So there's this co-worker named Lucy... An older mature-aged lady. And she keeps coming up to me and saying I have a doppelgänger. She acts all friendly and sweet about it so there's no easy way to tell her off. I get extremely uncomfortable with comparisons in general. I don't want to be someone else. I want to be me.
But it started last year...
Her daughter apparently saw a guy who ''looked'' like me smoking at a bus stop (I don't smoke) and began recording him to show her mom. Her mom then shoved her phone in my face and said ''SEE it's you haha.''
I pretended to look but couldn't bring myself to ACTUALLY look.
A few months later, during the Australian Open in January, this same woman (Lucy) comes back up to me and goes ''Do you have a doppelgänger?...''
If this sounds like déjà vu that's exactly what I was thinking (she has explicitly asked me that same question only months earlier). I started to tense up and brace myself knowing a comparison was coming...
This time her OTHER daughter was watching the tennis on TV and thought one of the players looked like me (her mom agreed) and then she raced over to tell me the next time we worked together.
She showed me a photo of this tennis player... And I wasn't sure whether I was meant to be insulted or flattered. I don't have an opinion on the guy's looks but I didn't personally see the resemblance myself.
''SEE, SEE. HE LOOKS JUST LIKE YOU''
I take a look at the photo and look back at her... What am I supposed to say?
''DO YOU NOT AGREE?!?!?''
I just shrugged and walked of.
After a while I think she assumed I was offended and began doing damage control. ''Don't worry, it's a good thing!!!!''
Me: I didn't say it wasn't, II just have no opinion... Lol.
Fast-forward some months to today... And for some reason Lucy is talking about doppelgängers with another co-worker named Abigail.
(I wasn't listening to their conversation)
Abigail randomly turns to me and goes, ''What about you... Do you have doppelgänger?''
And before I can respond Lucy goes ''YES, YES HE DOES'' and then lists the name of the tennis player.
A look of disgust sweeps across Abigail's face.
Abigail: Ewwww. Did you hear what she just said about you?...
Me: No...
Abigail: She said you look like [name of tennis player].
Me: Yeah... She told me a few months back during the Australian Open lol...
Abigail: DO YOU KNOW WHAT HE LOOKS LIKE?!?!
Me: No... Not really. Only one photo.
Abigail: IT'S NOT A GOOD THING. HE BEATS W*MEN UP. EWWWW.
And then I looked over at Lucy and she was trying to hide her laugh (apparently this was amusing to her).
So I don't know how to handle this but I feel miserable and super ugly now.
I wish people would stop bring my appearance up into things.
