Can a bounced rent cheque in Abu Dhabi lead to deportation? (AED 6,000, 3-day delay)

Hi everyone,

I need some clarity on a situation in Abu Dhabi.

We had a rent cheque of AED 6,000 that bounced because we were only 3 days late on payment. We had informed the landlord and asked for a short extension, but they still deposited the cheque early.

We are already arranging the payment and can settle it soon.

My question is specifically:

> Can a bounced rent cheque of this amount lead to deportation in the UAE?

> What are the usual consequences in cases like this (fine, court case, etc.)?

> Has anyone experienced something similar and what was the outcome?

Any guidance would really help.

Thank you.

Does anyone else think Andrew Koji would be a better fit as Wei Shen in a Sleeping Dogs movie adaptation than Simu Liu?

I mean he was the best part of the series "Warrior"

I understand that Wei Shen is Chinese, and Simu Liu is Chinese-Canadian, while Andrew Koji is Japanese-British. So casting decisions based on ethnicity, accent, and cultural fit can make sense, but he was the best part of Warrior, his fighting style and screen presence feel a lot closer to Wei Shen.

I also feel like Simu Liu is a bit too short for how I imagined the character and doesn’t fully match the physical presence.

Update: Brother’s UAE criminal case, now facing blackmail over divorce (need urgent advice)

Hey everyone,

First of all, we aren't financially stable at all to hire a lawyer

First post: https://www.reddit.com/r/uaelaw/s/hFZpIi8IBx

I had posted earlier regarding my brother’s situation involving a criminal case in the UAE after an argument with his pregnant wife. I’m posting again because the situation has escalated significantly, and we’re now dealing with what appears to be blackmail.

Quick recap of the original situation:

- My brother and his wife had frequent arguments

- During one incident (which we witnessed), he tried to leave to avoid escalation

- She attempted to stop him physically, and he pushed her away slightly to get out

- There was no assault or beating involved

- Despite this, her family filed a criminal complaint claiming domestic violence (he had never touched ever in his life although she used to beat him a lot every time they fight and even my parents)

What has happened since:

- Her family has now decided they want a divorce, despite my brother trying to reconcile and agreeing to their demands earlier

- Her father recently came to our house with family members, entered without permission, and recorded conversations of trying to reconcile. They had certain demands from him to reconcile and he did everything they asked him of to, which they recorded some of them. Yet, they changed their mind at the end and was like she needs divorce and doesn't want to continue the relationship. We were okay with the divorce until he pressed us with this case and instant triple talaq

- During this visit, he pressured us to agree to an instant triple talaq on the spot, even suggesting recording it on phone. He is not willing to go through proper channel. He says it doesn't exist in Muslim marriage, which is false

Why this is concerning:

- We refused because:

- Instant triple talaq is illegal in India (our marriage is registered in Mumbai, even though we live in the UAE and he got married here)

- It could be used against my brother legally later

- After this, her father started making threats that:

- They will only withdraw the criminal case if my brother gives instant triple talaq

- Otherwise, they will proceed with the case and “ruin his life”

Additional concern:

- He is now claiming he was able to get the court hearing postponed (which we believe is false), and is using that to pressure us further

- The hearing has been rescheduled to April 23

Our situation:

- We are not financially strong and cannot easily handle a prolonged legal battle

- We are willing to proceed with a proper legal divorce through the correct channels

- We are not refusing divorce, only refusing an illegal and risky method being forced on us

On top of that, my brother had resigned his job and doesn't have visa at the moment and trying to get a visa at the moment for freelance. We aren't even in a situation to get a visa for him

What we need advice on:

- How seriously does UAE law take situations like this when there are witnesses and context?

- Does this situation qualify as blackmail or coercion legally?

- Should we avoid any direct communication with her family at this point?

- Is it risky to delay divorce until after the criminal case is addressed?

- What is the safest legal path forward here (especially considering UAE + Indian legal overlap)?

We are trying to handle this lawfully and avoid making a mistake that could damage my brother’s future permanently.

Any legal insight, especially from people familiar with UAE law or cross-border marriage issues, would really help.

Thank you.

Need advice: Brother facing criminal case in UAE after argument with wife

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some guidance regarding a situation involving my brother in the UAE.

He has received a notice for an online court hearing for a criminal (penal) case. The case involves his wife, who is around 4 months pregnant.

To explain the situation clearly:

> They have been having frequent arguments lately

> During one of their recent fights, we (family) were physically present and witnessed what happened

> He has never beaten her

> That day, he was trying to leave the situation to avoid escalation

> While he was leaving, she tried to hit him and get him to stay, and he slightly pushed her away

> It wasn’t aggressive or forceful, more of a reaction to defend himself and get out of the situation

> Since then, her family seems to be escalating the situation, which may be why it has turned into a criminal case

Now it has turned into a criminal case, and we’re quite worried about how serious this could become.

I’d really appreciate help with:

> How such cases are typically viewed legally in the UAE

> Whether the court considers context like self-defense and witnesses

> What usually happens in the first online hearing

> Whether hiring a lawyer is necessary in a situation like this

> If cases like this can be settled or resolved mutually

We’re not trying to deny what happened, just trying to understand the situation properly and deal with it the right way.

Any advice or similar experiences would mean a lot. Thank you.
