Hello! I am writing a fantasy novel with a culture that is heavily inspired by the Byzantine empire, and the chariot games have especially peeked my interest!
I have been looking for sources on the games, so I went to my local library. The library has only two sources: one on the military and one as a general history of the empire, and the only sources in my college mostly revolve around the Byzantines as they related to the Ottomans. I also looked at that Netflix documentary, but something tells me that the series that put Vlad Tepes in Game of Thrones leather armour isn't the most reliable source in the world.
So, I figured I'd look here. Any sources that you can direct me to that discuss in great detail the chariot games and how they functioned would be really helpful to me. Especially if they have visual aids! I know about the xystis and the obvious corruption around them, but how did they actually function? What were the rules? Did they tell cultural tales like the gladiator arenas of Western Rome did? Any and all sources would be appreciated!
