Context: I am an incoming freshman for the Fall 2026 semester and I want to cancel my housing contract for dorming on campus. Back when I was submitting my college application last year, I signed the housing contract in case I ever had to room on campus.

I signed the contract because I was unsure whether or not my older sibling would be able to get the job they wanted here in Gainesville as soon as they graduated. If my sibling got the job, I would be able to stay with them in an apartment, but if they didn't I would have to dorm on campus.

Fast forward to last month, my older sibling got the job they wanted and will be working in Gainesville. We found an affordable apartment to stay in (relatively cheaper than dorming on campus actually). Now I sent a cancellation request on May 1 so that I can cancel my dorming housing contract.

I've been seeing here that incoming freshmen are not allowing cancel their housing agreement, and I was wondering if there are any exceptions to this, especially since the apartment we found is way affordable than dorming on campus.

If anyone has any experience in this, please help!
