TL;DR: Engineering student from tier-3 college, confused between Maths vs Sociology optional. Not very strong in maths but willing to work hard. Can maths still fetch ~250? Or is sociology a safer choice despite high competition?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently in college (engineering from a tier-3 college) and preparing for UPSC CSE 2027. From May onwards, most coaching institutes will begin their optional subject classes, and I’m quite confused about choosing the right optional.

Right now, I’m stuck between Mathematics and Sociology, and I would really appreciate some honest insights from people who have gone through this phase.

My concerns:

Mathematics Optional:

1)Can it be balanced effectively with GS preparation?

2)If I practice consistently, is it realistic to target 250+ marks?

3)I am not from an IIT/NIT background, and some topics in mathematics are not very strong for me right now.

4)Many people have advised me not to take maths due to my background—how valid is this advice?

Sociology Optional:

1)Since a large number of aspirants choose sociology, does it make scoring more difficult?

2)Is there unpredictability in marking compared to mathematics?

3)How much answer-writing skill matters vs content knowledge?

What I want to understand:

1)Pros and cons of both Mathematics and Sociology

2)Real challenges aspirants face after choosing either of these optionals

3)Which one is more sustainable in the long run with GS preparation

4)Whether hard work alone is enough to score well in Mathematics optional.

I’m ready to work hard, but I want to make a practical and informed decision, not an emotional one.
