Just looking for opinions and advice here, had my share of lemon cars and wanting to make as much of an informed decision as I can.

Looking for an AWD/compact 4x4, something that I can comfortably take off-road (nothing too strenuous), tow with if needed, take camping, and that I’m not climbing down into (currently in an Astra, and bumping my head on the door frame sends me sideways).

I am more than willing to buy a manual, just to avoid cvt trouble (got stung by the 2012/13 x trail already), not in a position to buy anything super new - if you feel strongly enough I’m still happy to hear it. Basically my budget is anywhere from 5-15k, less I can spend the better obviously but I don’t want to just buy someone else’s problems. Also I grew up driving older cars, like 89/92/96, so a brand new car is just a foreign concept to me.

I just want to know what I’m in for with each y/m/m and which ones to avoid. Also anything else worth noting when buying a car, like I’m more keen on cars with full service history and wouldn’t buy anything without a roadworthy and a PPI, but whatever other tips you have would be really appreciated.

TIA!

I am more than willing to buy a manual, just to avoid cvt trouble (got stung by the 2012/13 x trail already), not in a position to buy anything really newer than say 2018 - if you feel strongly enough I’m still happy to hear it. Basically I just want to know what I’m in for with each series/year and which ones to avoid. Also if you had to pick something other than a forester, what would it be.

TIA!
