Built a niche Android mapping app as a solo developer — now seeing recurring subscription growth
I’ve been building utility apps for a specific professional use case: map overlays, GIS access, exports, and annotation tools.
It was never a mass-market idea, so growth was slow early on: limited installs, small audience, and lots of iteration.
Over time, users who genuinely needed the tool started subscribing, and recurring revenue began growing steadily.
A few lessons I learned:
Small niche markets can still be profitable
If an app saves time, users will pay
Retention matters more than raw installs
Trust and support matter in paid utility apps
AI tools can greatly increase solo developer speed
Consistency beats chasing trends
Biggest takeaway: you don’t always need millions of users. A focused product for the right audience can work.
