Hi everyone, I’m currently a middle school student and I’ve been looking into the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Young Scholars program. It seems really prestigious, but I wanted to hear from people who have actually been in it or know someone who has.

How helpful is it in terms of opportunities, mentorship, and getting into top high schools or colleges later on? Does it actually make a big difference, or is it more just a nice recognition?

Also, what kinds of support do they really give (financial, advising, summer programs, etc.)?

I’d really appreciate any honest opinions—both pros and cons. Thanks!

Hi everyone,

I’m a middle school student preparing for Science Bowl this year. My strongest area is life science, especially topics like cell biology, genetics, physiology, and ecology, but I want to improve across all subjects and get more efficient with how I study overall.

I’d really appreciate advice from people who’ve competed before, especially at the middle school or early high school level. I’m trying to figure out what actually works when it comes to preparing for Science Bowl, not just passively reviewing notes or memorizing textbooks.

I’m also looking for recommendations on resources that helped you the most, whether that’s question banks, books, websites, or flashcard systems. I’ve seen a lot of different materials online, but I’m not sure what’s actually worth focusing on.

Another thing I’m curious about is how people practice buzzer speed and recall under pressure. I understand the content better than I can answer it quickly, so I want to bridge that gap.

For life science specifically, I’d also love to know what topics tend to show up the most or are the highest priority to study. And in general, if there’s anything you did that noticeably improved your performance, I’d really like to hear about it.

Thanks in advance for any advice!
