I (26F) live with three roommates. We have a chore wheel that we all agreed on, and my specific "assigned" task for this week was taking out the trash and recycling.
Yesterday was a nightmare at work, and I came home to a complete disaster zone. The sink was full of dishes (not mine), there was a mystery spill in the fridge, and someone left a trail of muddy footprints through the hallway. Even though none of that was "my job" on the wheel, I spent two hours deep-cleaning the kitchen and mopping the floors because I couldn't relax in the filth.
By the time I finished, I was exhausted. I made a piece of toast, went to my room, and crashed.
This morning, I woke up to a barrage of texts in the group chat. Apparently, because I forgot to take the bins to the curb, the trash truck missed us. My roommates are now saying I’m "unreliable" and "breaking the system" we all worked hard to create. One roommate even said, "It doesn't matter if you cleaned the kitchen, that wasn't your job this week. The trash was."
I pointed out that if I hadn't cleaned the kitchen, we’d have a fruit fly infestation, but they’re insisting that "a deal is a deal" and I’m the jerk for letting the one thing I was responsible for slide.
So, am I the jerk for prioritizing the immediate mess over the scheduled chore?
