I was lurking this sub a lot while in undergrad and had no idea how much better lifestyle gov accounting was compared to public and industry. I kept following the most common advice of public senior-> industry path and know many people irl who were unable to pivot out of PA after making senior bc of this job market. Why do people not mention starting career in local government accounting roles as opposed to PA? At least in my city and state theres a decent amount of openings for entry level but I feel as though most dont even know gov accounting roles exist and are accessible. And not to mention in this day and age of layoffs everywhere gov seems most secure. And most ppls long term goals are to end with a cushy job so why not start in gov?

I'm 4 months in and they told me no one has time to teach me anything or onboard me onto any projects and that I need to be proactive and find work and just asking for work to my seniors and managers is not enough. I need to find emails that are cc'd to the company inbox and reach out to the team member sending emails asking if I can help on the specific task.

Once i show enough enthusiasm and people want to work with me i can start to get assigned on tasks/people will be interested in teaching me once they like me. I was told I'm not showing enough interest that I want to work on stuff and I'm too passive and if this continues then I wont have enough billable hours and will be let go.

I'm not complaining and I'm grateful for even having a job and will do what it takes to keep it but I'm just wondering are all public jobs like this for new hires?

At this point it seems like PA firms will follow tech companies with massive layoffs and make existing employees workload increase even more. Whats the point of all of this then? Isnt state and local government much more secure? With tech layoffs at least they had cushy remote jobs where they didnt work as hard as PA but accounting layoffs i feel like sting more bc everyone's working their asses off for years.
