Struggling with OS
5+ year Solidworks user here. We are slowly transitioning from SW to OS at the company I work for. We went through training course and have been working with it for a few weeks.
The experience so far has been horrible.
The mating does not make any sense- When working on a concept a lot of time is spent on calculating and measuring the offsets to get the parts to correct location in order to design the mounting brackets and plates. The CAD software could at least calculate the offsets from the connector positions. The mate connectors are located randomly ( real parts have chamfers and fillets) and that causes the location of the mate connector to be at a random dimension from other outer faces of the part.
Cannot edit parts from assembly level. Instead of double clicking on a part or a feature you have to open the part, make the changes and then go back to the assembly to see if it fits.
Abstract document level which does not make any sense coming from SW.
Last but not least, the performance while working with bigger assemblies is not that much better than working in SW.
Throwaway acc, just wanted to vent. Most of the other users in this subreddit are tinkering at home with some 3D printed stuff and for this OS is a great choice. For professional use to design real machinery it is not suitable at all in my opinion. OS tried to reinvent the wheel but in my opinion failed miserably.
