I was on an lgbt dating app and was chatting with someone I thought was legit. We talked for a bit, I sent a couple normal pics (no nudes at all), and we ended up agreeing to meet up. We moved to texting (dumb move on my end) and that’s when things switched up. They started sending explicit stuff and asked me to send some back. I refused.
Right after that they started demanding money so I blocked them.
Not long after, I got a text from another number with screenshots of some of my social media accounts and claiming they had contact info for people I know. They threatened to expose me for being on the lgbt app. I panicked and ended up sending some money. I was honestly in shock and not thinking straight.
After that they came back asking for more, and that’s when I snapped out of it and realized what was going on. I blocked them again and removed my social media.
Some time passed with no contact, then I got another early morning message with the same type of threats about messaging my family and friends if I didn’t pay again. I blocked it again and didn’t respond.
They never followed through with anything and no one I know has received anything. It’s been some time now and nothing has happened.
I’m not really worried anymore. I definitely panicked at first, but looking back cutting off communication completely was the right move. More than anything I’m just annoyed I even sent money in the first place.
The follow-up attempt honestly felt weak. I wouldn’t be surprised if they try again at some point, but at this point I’m just ignoring everything. As far as actually reaching out to people I know, nothing has come of it so it seems like it was all a bluff.
Just wanted to share in case anyone else is dealing with something similar.
