“I wish I didn’t have a dad”

I’m the default parent (mom) of two girls. Mostly due to work schedules, I spend far more time with my kids than my husband does. My older, 4 year old daughter often makes remarks about loving me more, wanting to be with me, ect. Tonight she said to my husband “I wish I didn’t have a dad”. She said this to him because it was his turn for bedtime and she wanted to be with me. I can tell this really hurt him, even though he normally doesn’t take the parent preference personally. When they spend time together, they mostly play: ticking, wresting, physical activity. She does show him affection and connects with him in their own way. I know she didn’t really mean it, but what can we do to improve the parent preference situation?

Anyone have any ideas for what we can do here? We replaced a kitchen window with a patio door, but have this window well right outside the door. Right now we have a temporary step built overtop, but we plan to lay a stamped concrete patio soon. My husband is thinking of lowering the metal ring to ground level and laying a metal grate cover over the top. Any other ideas?

Edit to Add: I really appreciate those of you that took the time to give ideas without snark. I know it comes with the territory on reddit, but this is a snapshot of a bigger story.
