Is Conflict & Peace Studies a Viable Career Path for a Data Scientist?
Hello, I’m seeking career advice from people with experience in conflict and peace studies.
I’m currently working as a data scientist in the EU and I have 3.5 years of industry experience. I worked in recommender systems, classification and regression models, generative AI, NLP, deep learning, big data and causal inference.
Lately, I’ve been considering a transition into the field of conflict and peace studies. I’m interested in pursuing formal education, possibly a master’s degree, and exploring ways to apply my technical background to conflict prevention, mediation, and peacebuilding. My goal is to combine data science with social impact work in a meaningful way.
Thus, I would like to ask you:
- What does the current job market look like in this field?
- Is this a viable long-term career path?
- Is the field mainly oriented toward academia, or are there opportunities outside of it?
- Given my background, how realistic would it be to transition into this area and find a job?
From my initial research, I’ve seen that some organizations, such as International Crisis Group, are already using data analysis and related tools in their work, which encouraged me in research more about it.
Thank you so much for your time in reading it and answering it.
