I'm the parent of a new driver, 50/50 custody arrangement with the other parent. I have added my child to my auto insurance and have purchased a car for them that is titled in my name only. My child only drives this vehicle when they are at my house. My child has been getting driving practice with their other parent using the other parent's vehicles which are obviously not covered under my auto policy.

My question is, should the other parent also add our child to their auto insurance policy? If they do not add our child and there is an accident while driving other parent's vehicle, am I liable for those damages since our child is covered by my policy? If other parent refuses to add our child, should I not allow them to drive other parent's vehicles to reduce my financial liability? Other parent is high conflict and litigious and I'd like to minimize risk for myself as much as possible.

I had to sign a paper when my child was issued their driving permit saying that I would assume responsibility for their driving; other parent was not involved with the permitting process and did not sign anything taking responsibility. I don't know what, if any, affect this has on liability as far as auto insurance is concerned.

Thanks in advance for any input!
