First time car buyer – New vs Used vs CPO? Torn between Toyota Camry Hybrid XSE, Honda Civic Sport Hybrid Hatchback, and Toyota Pri

Hey everyone, long time lurker first time poster here. I could really use some outside perspective because I’ve been going back and forth on this for weeks and I’m starting to overthink it.
So here’s my deal. I work in the oil industry which means I’m constantly on the move. We’re talking long drives to job sites, sometimes in the middle of nowhere, unpaved roads, gravel, the whole thing. I’m often away for extended periods so my car basically needs to carry my life with me — clothes, cooking stuff, luggage, work gear. You get the picture.
Fuel efficiency is a big one for me because I genuinely rack up a lot of miles. I also really can’t afford to be breaking down somewhere remote with no cell signal and a tow truck two hours away. So reliability is non-negotiable. Same with maintenance — I don’t want a car that’s going to nickel and dime me every few months.
Comfort on long drives matters a lot too. There’s nothing worse than showing up to a job site already exhausted because your seat felt like a park bench for five hours.
I’m financing so budget isn’t a hard wall, but I’m not trying to overpay either. I want something that feels worth every penny.
After a bunch of research I’ve landed on three options but I’m still torn:
Used Toyota Prius XLE (2020–2022) — The numbers make a lot of sense honestly. 52–57 mpg, proven hybrid system, hatchback so I can actually fit my stuff, and used pricing is around $21–24K which is solid. Only thing I keep hearing is that long highway drives aren’t the most comfortable in it. Anyone with real experience here?
New Honda Civic Sport Touring Hybrid Hatchback (2025) — This one’s got me genuinely excited. More power, quieter ride, really fun to drive, and 48 mpg is still great. Problem is the hybrid version only exists for 2025 so buying used isn’t really an option and I’m looking at $32–34K new. Not sure if that premium is actually worth it over the Prius.
Used Toyota Camry Hybrid XLE (2020–2022) — Probably the most comfortable of the three for long drives from what I’ve read. Same bulletproof Toyota reliability, around 46–52 mpg. Main downside is it’s a sedan so cargo space isn’t as flexible. I carry a lot of stuff so that bothers me a little.
So yeah, that’s where I’m at. Few things I’d love your input on:
• If you were in my shoes which one would you go with and why?
• Prius owners — how do you honestly feel after a 4–5 hour highway drive? Seat comfort, road noise, all of it?
• Is the $8–10K difference between the used Prius and the new Civic Hybrid actually justified or am I just getting excited by the shiny new thing?
• And honestly, am I missing something obvious? Is there a car I haven’t even considered that fits this kind of lifestyle better?
Appreciate any real world opinions. Getting pretty tired of just reading spec sheets.
