Need advice for planning, what you wish you had done sooner.

My dad just hit 76, mom isn’t far behind. However, Dad just got diagnosed with Parkinson’s. He’s going down hill quickly from what he says, meanwhile my mom has a new lease on life (recently got cataracts surgery) and her overall health is improving.

Some background here is that I live out of state and have for the last nearly 20 years. Sister is still nearby but not super experienced or equipped for long term care or the more serious decisions. My parents house has been a wreck ever since hurricane Harvey, my dad is a masterclass in procrastination and has delayed repairs for years trying to get the insurance to pay for non storm related damages (very long story but makes just selling the house very complicated).

What I really need the help with is figuring out what I need to and what I can possibly accomplish in a 4-5 day visit I have planned coming up. Money is tight for me and I haven’t been able to visit in almost 7 years. So I really need to assess their situation and do as much prep work / preparation for the future as I can while I am there.

I can provide more details if needed but what kind of things do you wish you had taken care of or prepared before one of your parents got too far gone?
