Aren’t you tired of having your expectations subverted? I know I am! Daredevil’s positive portrayal of Christianity is honestly a breath of fresh air. Arts have been saturated with negative portrayals of Christianity that this in of itself has become cliche. We have come to expect it and look for it. Daredevil is subverting your expectations by not subverting it. Matt Murdock, the devil of Hell’s Kitchen is a devout catholic who struggles with faith, and with his own darkness. His discussions with his priest are some of the most interesting parts of the series. The way he challenges his beliefs while the priest never tries to act self righteous but like a friend who’s trying to understand.
It’s interesting to see Matt lose his faith in Season 3 just to do the right thing in the end. His catholic beliefs create an interesting dynamic. He doesn’t kill, not because he’s afraid of its implications like Batman but because he believes in grace and the sanctity of life. This, makes his life significantly harder. His whole moral code is built on his faith and this means that his actions are less of a choice and more of an obligation. As long as he believes, he cannot bring himself to take a life. This, in my opinion is the reason why the finale of Season 3 works. His rage and anger has weight because he knows what he has to do but cannot bring himself to do it.
The way he talks about Job and insults him in the house of God. The beautiful tapestry monologue. The confessions. His delusion of thinking God has given him powers to hear every prayer in church.
The religious aspect of Daredevil is really interesting. The devil who lives in Hell’s Kitchen, a devout catholic born of a nun. Red head who sees a world on fire. Great stuff.
