The Benefits of Learning Chess

A lot of people say chess has no value outside of chess.

I disagree.

I went from losing to 800-rated bullet players to hitting 2100 - 2300 on Lichess.

Did chess magically fix my work ethic, attention span, or hatred of memorization?

No.

But it absolutely sharpened my intuition.

I learned how to recognize patterns quickly, evaluate risk in real time, make decisions under pressure, and recover from mistakes without freezing.

That does not just feel useful in chess.

I feel more confident learning systems now. Games, workflows, business problems, software, strategy, anything with rules, constraints, feedback loops, and time pressure.

Chess is a system.

If you can learn chess, you can learn other systems too.

The catch is that chess will not automatically make you disciplined. In fact, bullet can become its own form of procrastination if you are not careful.

But for me, chess absolutely improved how I think.

Harry Potter - Balenciaga image edit

Was watching the film and asked ChatGPT to make this scene Balenciaga. Beautiful. I probably could have done more, but I was initially 100% positive it was going to refuse to do it.
