I’m exploring setting up payroll in Switzerland and trying to get a realistic picture before diving in.

On paper it looks attractive (lower employer contributions vs EU), but I keep seeing that the real complexity is at the canton level tax rates, withholding tables, family allowances, etc.

A few things I’m trying to understand better:

  • How painful is it to manage multi-canton payroll in practice?
  • Is it worth outsourcing early, or manageable in-house with the right setup?
  • How tricky is withholding tax for foreign employees day-to-day?
  • Any gotchas with the BVG/pension system that aren’t obvious at first?
  • What tends to break or go wrong most often?

Would really appreciate insights from people who’ve actually run payroll there or scaled a team in Switzerland.
