My partner and I share a room, where we live things are hard to get a full flat for yourself. We also have 2 cats, the room is quite spacious, so it is not a problem. Now, we were getting ready to go out, and my partner, seeing that I was taking a bit more time, opened the door, and left it open, waiting for me there. I asked her to close it, she said why, it was not a problem and, after multiple times, she finally does so.

(Conversation happened in another language, I'm translating it) After getting out myself I told her again that she should not do that, as there are risks with the cats zipping out. To which she replied that they don't do that. I said that it did not matter, as something sudden can spook them and make them run for their lives. That we are responsible for their lives and we should talk measures to prevent any issue, even if it is unlikely. A bit more back and forth until she eventually said "yes, sure you must have the reason always" to which I replied "no, it is taking measures to protect them. They are our responsibility the moment we decided to take them in". She kept saying "yeah, yeah, you ain't right"

At that point, I finally checked out, have her the documents for what we were going to do and told her to do it herself, that I was going to walk by myself. Did I overreact? Was I wrong in my assessment? What could I have done differently? Am I being overprotective of our cats?

For context, we have checked and yes, they do seem really afraid of going out. As in, claw you to jump out of your arms to get back inside (they do not take out claws for almost anything). Also, she has an issue with her back that does not allow her to bend down to cat level fast, much less catch one or two. Not only that, but, while our windows are catified, the common spaces are not, and the other tenants tend to keep them wide open. So, I treat common zones as if it is the outside for the cats. This behavior has happened more than once too (her leaving the door open and standing there)

EDIT: Before someone asks about the Cat Tax, I am unsure if I am allowed to put photos here, since I'm not sure if they would break the "no identifiable information" rule.
