Mini 94 DC night
Started with a 1.5L magnum of 2002 Krug and ended with a 1912 D’Oliveiras Madeira which felt basically indestructible.
The Krug was unreal right out of the gate. Toasted brioche, citrus, nuts, super rich but still crazy fresh. Magnum def helped.
Then we did a mini 1994 Diamond Creek lineup and it was wild how different all 3 vineyards showed.
Red Rock Terrace microclimate was easily my favorite. Huge nose right away cassis, cigar box, graphite, earth, dark fruit. Had the most depth and energy of the three and just kept getting better in the glass.
Gravelly Meadow was my second favorite and really enjoyed it as night went on. More floral, tobacco, cedar, silky texture. Less explosive than Red Rock but incredibly polished and honestly beautiful.
Volcanic Hill was still great, just showed a little more ripe and straightforward to me. Dark fruit, mocha, spice, softer overall. Still awsome mature Napa but didn’t hit me the same way as the other two.
And the 1912 Madeira at the end was just ridiculous. Caramel, orange peel, walnut, coffee, sea salt. The finish legit lasted forever. Hard to even belive a wine that old can still taste that alive.
