What happens in this situation? I’m the seller.

I sold an item few weeks back 4/25 on auction which ended at $300 (Lot of small cheap items not worth selling separate).

I shipped the item next day by USPS ground, it’s 19lbs so shipping UPS would’ve been crazy expensive probably 50-60% of item value. The scheduled delivery date was 5/4.

Buyer seems cool but I can tell he’s impatient as he already messaged me day of delivery to ask why the package hadn’t shown up. I told him tracking shows it’s delayed and arriving late. Also to give it at least another week before I reach out to USPS to ask for an update as sometimes they miss checkpoints and items arrives days later, he agreed.

It’s now 5/11, and the last update on tracking was 5/4 “arriving late/running behind”. I’m assuming they lost it cause 7 days without a scan update is unusually long.
So my question is assuming it is in fact lost, what is the best move for me in this situation?
I don’t want to cancel the order just yet even if the buyer requests because then I’m out the item & $ of refunding it, also with it potentially showing up after the fact. I also don’t want to resell the item because it was a hassle to sell in the first place and there’s no guarantee it would end close to the same ending bid, assuming it’s not lost, buyer just wanted a refund, and I was able to get the item back. I insured it for the sell amount as well, so not sure if it’s just easier filing a claim with USPS to get my $ back than trying to resale for the 3rd time.

Worst case we have to go through eBay what happens then? I’m assuming eBay covers the buyer, he gets his money back, then I get docked $ and have to get my $ back through USPS?

Also the last of the canceled 5 I’d been looking for. Still can’t believe I tracked all these down MOC in 1.5 months time, my luck is done for the near future.

Still looking for the chases though.
