Hi lads, my ten year old is enjoying more and more time out in the park with friends, but had a bit of an issue this week where he ended up alone and was worried about what to do. We have an old simple nokia phone which I'd like to send him out with so he can always call if any issues crop up.

We got him a tesco sim last year but it basically never got used so it's now been deactivated (I didn't add any credit since it wasn't being used). I know you need to use the phone once every 180 days to keep the number active, but I can't quite get my head around how to keep a PAYG sim in credit for really light use - do I have to top it up every month? Or would I be able to get away with topping it up less frequently?

Ideally I'd like to buy a tenner of credit once every 3 or 4 months and know that he'd have enough credit to make a couple of calls or send a couple of texts in a pinch - zero need for mobile data. Then, obviously, in the future as he becomes more of a phone user we can set up a proper monthly PAYG or bill pay option when he needs it.

Any tips from other parents?
