ATF FOPA rules change proposal

The ATF has released their proposed FOPA rule change: https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2026/05/06/2026-08916/clarifying-interstate-transportation-of-firearms-under-the-gun-control-act
It's a very long read, but also interesting if you enjoy legal analysis. They specifically cover Port Authority overreach in the Revell v. Port Authority of New York and New Jersey case. Per the conversation from the previous discussion, it specifically calls out stops for lodging, food and transfer from airports to other forms of transportation.
Excerpt: "This would include, but not be limited to, staying in temporary lodging overnight, stopping for food, fuel, vehicle maintenance, an emergency, medical treatment, transiting between modes of transportation, ..."
Important to note that this is only a proposed rule. It is not finalized yet. But I see no reason why it wouldn't make it across the finish line. There's no vote involved. It's up to the ATF and they wouldn't have gone to this trouble if they didn't intend to issue it.
As others will undoubtedly point out, this won't stop law enforcement who is ignorant of these rules from arresting you. Nothing can stop that. But traveling with a printed copy of the final rule after it is published will likely get you on the rest of your journey pretty quickly.
