While countries like China and India consume a higher total share of fossil fuels, per capita consumption in developed countries remains the highest.

China has the highest annual coal consumption, followed by India due to their high population size. However, per capita consumption remains highest in the United States, Europe, Canada, and a few developed Asian countries.

Countries with fertility rates above or below replacement level, 2025

Source : UN World Population Prospect Report

South Korea and China have the lowest fertility rates, at 0.8 and 1 respectively.

Currently, India has the highest population in the world, but its fertility rate has fallen to 2.0.

At present, Chad, Nigeria, Somalia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Pakistan have the highest fertility rates, at 4 or more.

The world population is expected to peak and begin declining in the mid-to-late 21st century, most likely between the 2060s and 2080s.

The European Union fertility rate has declined to a record low of 1.34 live births per woman as of 2024, lowest since 2001, highlighting a persistent "baby crisis" in the region.

Its club-like appendage can accelerate at around 10,000 g and strike at speeds of about 23 meters per second (50+ mph / 80 km/h) underwater. The strike is so fast that it creates cavitation bubbles — tiny vapor bubbles that collapse and produce a second shockwave. That means the prey gets hit twice: once by the club and once by the collapsing bubble.
