Hey everyone! I know it's super embarrassing, but I hit a patch of sand, couldn't brake in time, and literally parked my new Canyon Grizl CF 7 straight into a wall at around 10-15 km/h.
Since I'm a new owner, my "carbon paranoia" kicked in immediately. I've done all the home inspections I could think of to check the fork and frame:
- Thorough visual inspection (even with a flashlight) – zero scratches, spiderwebs, or clear coat damage.
- Coin tap test – sounds uniformly crisp (like thin plastic) everywhere, no dull/dead spots.
- Drop test (bouncing the front wheel from a few inches) – completely solid, zero rattling.
- Front thru-axle goes in and out smoothly with absolutely no resistance.
- Test ride over some chunky stones – no creaking noises, and the bike rides perfectly straight with no hands.
I'm running pretty beefy 45mm tires, so I'm guessing they took the brunt of the impact and acted like an airbag.
My question is: given the low speed and absolutely zero symptoms, can I assume the bike is 100% fine and sleep peacefully? Or can carbon fail internally in a way that shows no visual damage, makes no noise, and still allows the bike to ride perfectly straight?
Thanks in advance for any reassurance (or bringing me down to earth)!
