I’m a casual cleaner for a workplace I’ve had a job at for over three years, and today I received a call from an Onsite Manager at my workplace discussing that he needs me to go either permanent or part-time.

My Onsite Manager started the conversation with asking about what role I fill (casual, part-time etc.) and what shifts I would like to continue working. Upon telling him I’m a casual cleaner that usually only ever works weekends he questioned if I would consider going either permanent or part-time, and explained that our rosters have changed and now only allow for permanent roles. I’ve only ever worked casual 4 hour weekend shifts (Sat and Sun) with the occasional extra shift as I have numerous physical health and mental health conditions, which is something I briefly explained to him. I also informed my Manager that I would need to remain casual for both the money and the fact that I’m not always reliable given my circumstances. He continued to insist that I would have to either become permanent or part-time despite this, and then asked me about how long I’ve worked for the company, to which I replied with over three years. He almost seemed surprised? Regardless, he didn’t change his mind, and said I would need to think about the situation and call him back.

I feel as though it’s also worth mentioning that this isn’t the first time someone higher up at my workplace has asked that I switch from causal to another role. The last time this topic was brought up I declined the offer, and seemingly nothing happened. The new roster that was brought out for those upcoming shifts didn’t include me, but that was promptly fixed as my boss insisted that she needs me to continue working, and that she believes i’m one of their best cleaners and doesn’t want me to lose my role/job. That was at a time where things were less serious though, as our company has gone through quite a few changes lately and it’s very out of the blue for our Onsite Manager to contact me. My health complications are a serious discussion I’ve had with every boss (3-4) I’ve had over the three years, and it’s never been an issue. I’ve always ensured that I honestly tell my boss I have x y z going on, and have explained how it may affect my working ability.

What are my options here, and is this something I can be fired for? Thanks
