How do you guys deal with level 10 opponents? Especially at sea.

My character is like level 6 I lowk have to fight hands now, it took me forever to board and beat the grim reaper (by the end of my deaths and retries of boarding them, I had 150+ deckhand insignia and like 6 veteran insignias) and I had to spam a blunderbus that threw the guys off ship to get the kills. My crew was useless (did little to no damage, just got in the way) against them and those were level 8 boarding crew items. I have cleared many islands on the map of the objs and used my ascension on the WRONG weapon so I lowk dont have much of those bars left.
