Hi, I recently started fostering kittens with a new organization that is much more piecemeal and less institutional than I am used to. Like, there is no actual building, everything is run out of various volunteer’s homes.

I recently picked up two kittens for foster, directly from the trapper before the intake with the organization. I noticed pretty quickly that one of the kittens (6 weeks old) has very noticeable pectus excavatum and a mild case of swimmers syndrome. He has diarrhea but is otherwise eating and able to move about pretty fine. The medical coordinator seemed completely unconcerned, and when I brought them for intake basically said “he’ll be fine, just let us know if he develops breathing problems”. It’s worth noting that she is only a vet student and the appointment was out of her home.

According to my own research, this condition should be taken more seriously and he should have at minimum corrective bracing for his chest under veterinary supervision or potentially have a chest plate put in surgically to correct his rib issues. He should also have his legs taped and physical therapy for swimmers syndrome. Otherwise I’ve heard these conditions can worsen and potentially become fatal?

Am I overreacting here or is it reasonable for me to feel concerned and like this isn’t being taken seriously? Is it appropriate for me to attempt any at home treatment on my own? If so, any advice on how to properly do so? Thank you.
