Advanced Media Controller — beta with PlayerTabs UI (app pinning), rotating vinyl art, slider sync, GNOME 40–50

Been reworking a lot of the internals lately and pushed a beta branch with the current state. This one focuses more on stability and making things behave properly across setups, along with a refreshed PlayerTabs UI.

what’s new

  • PlayerTabs UI (with app pinning)
updated tab layout with support for pinning your preferred players. makes switching faster if you usually stick to the same apps. switching logic itself is also more reliable now across flatpak, snap, appimage, etc.

  • rotating vinyl album art
album covers now render like a vinyl disc and rotate with playback. simple effect, but fits nicely without being distracting.

  • progress slider tweaks
better sync with playback, smoother updates. no more random jumps or lagging behind.

compatibility

  • GNOME 40 → 50 supported

kept support for older GNOME versions (40–48) on purpose. a lot of distros like debian or zorin are still on those, so dropping support there didn’t feel right. trying to keep it usable across both older and newer shells.

  • tested on mixed setups, not just one environment

fixes

  • fixed memory leaks (mostly signal handling + cleanup issues)
  • improved player detection reliability
  • cleaned up parts of the code to align better with GNOME extension guidelines
  • small performance improvements overall

links

note

this is still beta, so expect some rough edges depending on your setup. if something breaks or behaves weirdly with a specific player, logs or details would help a lot.

if you’ve been using it already, this build should feel more stable and a bit more predictable overall.

Two annoying issues

I’ve been using ZorinOS Core 18 for a few months now. It’s fully updated and almost everything works perfectly. But there are two separate issues that have been bothering me and starting to get frustrating. The first one is related to the microphone.

I work from home and have several meetings throughout the day. I have a BM800 microphone and a Redragon headset with a mic, and neither device is recognized by the operating system. The Redragon is actually detected, but there’s no audio input at all, even after tweaking settings in Alsamixer.

On my previous machine (an Acer Nitro 5), I only had to change a few settings and everything worked fine — both devices were recognized. But on my current laptop (a Nitro V15), that same fix didn’t work at all, it didn’t make any difference. What I changed was:

sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

and I added the line:

options snd-hda-intel model=alc245,dell-headset-multi

The second issue is related to gaming: if I Alt + Tab, the game freezes and I’m forced to restart it.

Any ideas on how to fix these issues?

I installed zorin os to my framework 16 w/ rtx 5070

that is all I have to say. Loving it so far.

Jumped from pop os as pop os doesn’t support secureboot, mint is ugly, and I don’t want to deal with ubuntu snap

I like zorin because it is stable and lags behind ubuntu releases, because as a robotics developer, ROS compatibility usually lags behind latest releases

Sandbox or .deb (official apps)

I have been new to Linux since January, and I am transitioning slowly to the OS from Windows. In Windows, I had apps like Notion, Tick tick, Claude, etc., a lot of them don't have an "official" app released for Linux. What is the difference between downloading (for this case) Tick Tick from Linux, which is a .deb, and there is an unofficial wrapper of Tick Tick on the app store? Is it safe to log in with my account on the version of the app store even though it is sandboxed? I am still learning how it works around Linux. What would be the differences between the official version (from a website) and a wrapper (unofficial) version from the app store?

Installation problem

Hey guys... I was using Zorin OS 18 Core perfectly fine when I'm still in my Intel Pentium g645 with 4GBx1 DDR3 1333mhz ram. but when I decided to buy a used motherboard so that I can run 4GBx2 1333mhz, I also decided to upgrade my processor to Intel Core i5 3570

Logically speaking, it should run better because 3570 is stronger than G645, but I now have problems with Zorin itself. Even after doing complete reinstallation, I'm getting graphical errors, and when I do safe installation with nomodeset, I'm just looping in user login. The problem persist even when I try to use Zorin OS 17.3 Lite version, I'm still getting graphical errors in normal installation and user login loop in safe graphics mode. Can you guys help me?

My PC specs is
Intel Core i5 3570
Intel HD Graphics 2500
DDR3 4GBx2 1333MHz CL9
1TB Storage (500GBx2) Windows 10 dual boot

The audio from video files can not be heard. But audio will play from music and games.

Hello, im testing out Zorin on an old cheap HP laptop I got back in 2011. I like everything I see so far except the fact that it does not play the audio from video files.

I tried both the default apps, as well as vlc and a few other apps but still couldn't hear anything.

I would think its a user issue or OS issue, but I can hear things from my browser, my music files, and video games just fine.

As a person who whose linux experience is only Steam OS and bazzite im not sure of what the potential problems could be.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the issue might be?
