Hi /r/AskLosAngeles. I’m Nithya Raman, Los Angeles City Councilmember for CD4 and candidate for Los Angeles Mayor. Ask Me Anything. What do you want to see from your mayor?

Update: Thank you so much everyone for participating! There are a couple more questions Nithya really wanted to answer, and I'm hoping we'll be able to get her answers posted over the next couple of days.

I'll be answering questions starting around 2:00 pm this afternoon.
Hi r/AskLosAngeles!

I’m Nithya Raman, Los Angeles City Council Member for Council District Four and candidate for Mayor.

I’m an immigrant, an urban planner by training (I earned my master’s degree at MIT), and the mother of 10-year-old twins.

I’m running for mayor because Los Angeles is in crisis- everyone can feel it. The city is unaffordable, unable to deliver basic services, and failing to provide transparency & accountability. In City Hall, there is a lack of leadership instead of the urgency and vision we need.

On council, I passed the strongest renter protections in LA’s history, lowered rent increases for over 1.5 million Angelenos, established independent redistricting, and wrote LA’s sanctuary city ordinance. In my own district, I reduced tents and encampments by 54% and built more protected bike lanes than any other council district. I’m ready to take this progress city-wide!

I want to fight for this city’s future: build more housing, address homelessness, deliver on public safety, expand Metro, and create a city that works for everyone.

And with that, Ask Me Anything! Who’s ready?

Being a new parent in Venice has really opened my eyes.

No grassy parks, impossible to walk with a stroller on these sidewalks (do people with a wheelchair just stay home??), crazy tweakers everywhere scaring young mothers, library is a homeless shelter, zero noise ordinances causing you to deal with motorcycle clans that sound like machine guns are going off, can't leave your stroller anywhere without a dog peeing on it, cant enjoy the beach because leashless dogs trample your baby

I’m an 18-year-old girl, and I just want to share my hopeless situation and stress with you—maybe you’ll stress out instead of me :)
My boyfriend David is going to Venice for his birthday with his whole big family (it’s their tradition). He’s turning 18, and I told his mom that I’d like to go and surprise him, but I couldn’t find cheap tickets. We live in Kraków, and my parents seemed to agree, and I was already messaging his mom about the trip. His birthday is on May 9, I was supposed to arrive on May 8, then leave Italy with them on May 10 (by bus with the whole family), and return together by plane to Kraków. And everything seemed fine—we agreed on everything.
But then my stupid head remembered about the mandatory diploma project of my best friend Lily, which is on Friday, May 8 at 20:00. My Lily is a choreographer, and I, in turn, am a dancer who is participating in this shoot. THE SHOOT CANNOT BE RESCHEDULED, the deadline is May 12.
So there’s no way out—the only option is to fly on May 9 at 11:55 and arrive around 13:00-something. Now I’m terrified, I can’t sleep, because tomorrow morning I have to discuss this with my mom and my boyfriend’s mom. We’re going for coffee tomorrow at 10, and I have to come up with and explain what the point is for me to go then. And also explain how I forgot to warn everyone and forgot about this damn shoot myself.
My other best friend Lizzie is asleep (I’m staying over at her place), and I can’t talk it through with her. And now I’m in full panic about what an idiot I am. I’ll tell you how it goes tomorrow afternoon.
