salem doesn’t usually raise its voice
not like that
not in the open
but today / it did
cardboard signs pulled out of trunks / markers bleeding through the back / words written fast but meaning it
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement / spelled out in thick lines / crossed out / called out / held up high enough so passing cars couldn’t ignore it
people lined the sidewalks / not perfect lines / just clusters
neighbors / coworkers / people who’ve seen each other before but never like this
someone starts a chant / it stumbles / then catches
voices stacking / finding rhythm / getting louder the longer they stay /
cars slow down
some honk / quick / sharp / gone
some don’t
but the people standing there / they don’t move
sun hitting faces / wind tugging at signs / feet planted like they decided already
this isn’t about being loud all the time
it’s about this moment
being seen / being counted / standing next to someone who decided the same thing
across the street / someone watches from a distance / arms crossed / not stepping in / not stepping away
and that’s part of it too
salem holding both sides / in the same air
but on this stretch of road
there’s no quiet version of it
just people / showing up / staying longer than expected / saying it plain
we’re here
and for a while / that’s a start
