The Soviet T-35 is widely regarded as one of the most ambitious yet flawed projects in tank history. Designed as a "land dreadnought" to break through fortified lines, it remains the world’s only five-turreted tank to enter serial production. It became a symbol of engineering gigantism that ultimately failed the test of real-world combat. Its primary downfall was excessive complexity. Coordinating an 11-man crew spread across five separate turrets proved nearly impossible; in the heat of battle, a commander could not effectively direct the fire of all guns simultaneously, leading to disjointed actions. Furthermore, its massive 50-ton weight resulted in disastrous unreliability. The engine and transmission operated at their absolute limits, causing the tanks to break down frequently even during routine marches.Despite its intimidating appearance, the T-35 was extremely vulnerable. Its armor (only 20–30 mm thick) was easily pierced by standard anti-tank guns of the era, while its massive silhouette made it an unavoidable target. Consequently, in 1941, the vast majority of these machines were abandoned or destroyed by their own crews due to mechanical failures before ever engaging the enemy. Ultimately, the T-35 was an effective propaganda tool for parades, but a completely useless instrument for modern warfare.
