ECTS not fulfilled

Hey guys,

I have completed 82 credits at the end of my 5th semester. I did not know that we need to finish 90 credits after the 5th semester. I am currently doing a masters in straubing campus. I was doing one external voluntary internship for 6 months. I wrote an email to the examination board saying that due to the internship I wasn't able to join classes. However I was wondering did something like that ever happen to anyone? What might they do

Dear all,

I am a student at TUM and I failed my last remaining exam by 0.5 points out of 90. Since this is my last remaining module for my degree, the situation is very serious for me and may have severe academic consequences, possibly including exmatriculation...

As far as I understand, there is a one-month deadline to file a Widerspruch against the official decision.

My main question is strategic:

Should I submit a short Widerspruch myself first in order to preserve the deadline, and then consult a lawyer afterward? Or is it better to have the Widerspruch submitted by a lawyer from the beginning?

The two grading issues I have identified are:

  1. I am also interested in general experiences with exam-grading disputes where a question was phrased broadly, but the correction appeared to rely on a narrower expected answer. Are these kinds of issues usually worth discussing with a lawyer, or are they normally treated as grading-discretion matters?
  2. In a modeling exercise, I made one underlying mistake that appears twice because the model has two identical or structurally parallel halves. I was penalized 0.5 points twice, resulting in a total loss of 1.0 point. I am wondering whether this could be challenged as a repeated penalty for the same mistake rather than two independent errors.

I know that examiners have broad grading discretion, so I am not assuming that these arguments are automatically strong. My concern is mainly whether, given the small margin of 0.5 points and the serious consequences, it is worth filing a Widerspruch and whether I should involve a lawyer immediately.

I would be grateful for any experience with Widerspruch in German university exam law, especially in Bavaria/TUM, and for any advice on the best practical next step.

Thank you.

Working student after handing in master thesis

Hi there,

Does anyone know if I can still work as working student for the rest of the semester after handing in my master thesis? On the website it says one does stay matriculated until the semester, in which the thesis was handed it in, is over.

Maybe someone was in a similar situation and can give me more info.

Thanks for your help!

Social life

- Undergrad uni experience question

Hello ! I currently am considered studying at the TUM, but I also hold an offer for a uni in the UK which is very good (50th in the world) and also is known for its amazing social life, clubs etc. However tuition would put me in like £35k debt out of university (≈€40,000)
From what I’ve seen TUM is less like this, but is higher ranked than my UK university and tuition would be free. So how social is it really? Nightlife okay? Assuming I stay in student halls what’s the international student experience like for those who have been through it?

Does TUM consider any ecas or projects and how hard is it to get into bsc aerospace?

I am an A Level student currently giving my exams. My only option for studying in germany is TUM cs they have bsc aerospace in english I will be taking a gap year and learning German after my exams end. Im also thinking of doing some projects related to eng during ny year off. This is mostly cause I dont think my grades will be enough honestly😭

So like i do Phsyics, maths, egp, Computer and chemistry yes ik its a lot but it was compulsory in my school and I needed these subs to studynin mt home country but I dont want to honestly cs aerospace engineering is ass here. Soo I actually wanted AABBB I did egp last year so I had a b there and for others I hoped to get these gardes but honestly I dont think I will cs the grade boundaries are prolly going to fuck me up. So if I get BBCC in rest of the subejcts do I have any chance?and If I do some extra projects? Please someone help me out cs i haven't found any otehr unsi that teach aerospace or even mechanical in english this is my only option im so scared 😭

TUMonline

Hello, I made a mistake when entering my academic background and I didn't know that we cant delete it so I just made another one. Now it looks like I have 2 degrees. Does anyone know how I can delete it? I also emailed Tum, and they told me that the Bewerbung und Immatrikulation Abteilung would correct it when lapping at my application but I am not really sure about that.

Chancing me for TUM, Management and Data Science (English) | Turkish international student, also need help understanding the VPD and application process

Hey everyone. Trying to get a realistic chance assessment for TUM's Management and Data Science program (English-taught, Bachelor's). I also have some genuine process questions at the end because navigating German university admissions from Turkey is not straightforward and I haven't found clear answers anywhere.

Background: Vocational technical high school affiliated with one of Turkey's top engineering universities. Graduating 2026. GPA 92%, highest informatics grade in school, top of class in math during preparatory year. SAT is 1400-1450 which I know is not great.

CCompetitions, international: Won 1st place worldwide in an international math and CS competition (2025), ranked 44th globally (1st in Turkey) in an international ML competition (2024), received a gold award in a computational sciences challenge (2026), and was selected as one of 5 students worldwide for a certificate in mathematical foundations of CS. Four consecutive years in the national CS olympiad, consistently placing in the top 200 and ranking 1st among vocational high schools.

Competitions, national: Only high school team to reach the finals of Turkey's largest tech competition, finishing in the top 7 against university teams — I led the team for three years as software lead. Also reached the finals in the NLP and Healthcare AI categories in separate years, and placed 37th out of 173 teams in a university-level programming competition, competing solo against university students.

Technical experience: Completed a reinforcement learning internship at a top national university, took undergraduate and graduate courses there in grades 10–11, and finished a master-level Data Science bootcamp at a US university as the youngest participant. I've also had national HPC access and received $2,000 in GPU credits for an AI project.

Projects: Built a three-year autonomous vehicle project from hardware up, developed an AI platform for agricultural optimization with an international collaborator, contributed to a national Turkish NLP initiative, and collaborated on NLP research with a researcher now at a top US university.

Leadership: Founded a student AI community that grew to 60+ members and is still active. Served as an EU Erasmus+ country representative, led a six-country team on a smart ticketing project, taught in a paid public AI bootcamp alongside a university professor, and covered my own expenses throughout high school through freelance work and teaching.

My process questions:

I'm a Turkish high school student so I understand I need a VPD from uni-assist before TUM can actually process my application. I haven't started this yet and I'm trying to understand how it all fits together.

  1. How long does the VPD process realistically take for a Turkish applicant, and how early should I submit to uni-assist? What documents do they need specifically?
  2. What is the actual application timeline for winter semester 2026/27? When does uni-assist need documents versus when does TUM need the full application?
  3. How much does the SAT matter for this program? I'm at 1400-1450 and I'm being honest that it's probably my weakest point on paper. Does it significantly hurt me or is it more of a supplementary document they glance at?
  4. Does TUM require IELTS or TOEFL for an English-taught program, or does prior English education and SAT scores count as evidence?
  5. Realistic chances overall? I know the profile is strong in some areas but the SAT and the vocational school background might read differently to a German admissions committee than they would to a US one.

Appreciate any honest input, especially from people who have gone through TUM admissions from Turkey or similar systems.

One more thing specific to my situation. I am currently in 12th grade and my national university entrance exam results will come out after I submit my application. I am not sure how to handle this, whether I should apply now with my current documents and send the results later, whether TUM expects them before making a decision, or whether this is something uni-assist needs before issuing the VPD. If anyone has gone through this exact situation, applying to a German university as a Turkish 12th grader whose exam results are not out yet, I would really appreciate knowing how you handled it.

Hi everybody, currently I have been accepted to Penn State for aerospace engineering, I am from India, and I will be going for the bachelors program. In the past few weeks, I have been realising a few things and decided to apply to TUM Germany as well for the same course for which I am still yet to apply also I am in the process of applying for F1 visa for PSU.

Why Penn State - Already have an offer in hand, made friends from India who will be going to Penn State - culturally easier, english speaking (no need to learn German A2), a much better social life - popular night life and sports (it matters to me cus i am a huge party animal), more importantly the rigor of the course is much easier compared to the one I have do in TUM, even if its the same course, TUM is known for its demanding academics.

Why TUM - Firstly, I do not want to live that far away from my family, and in case of emergencies. Secondly the tuition would be half I paid for my high school (8X cheaper compared to PSU), an easy breeze for my family to fund. Thirdly, the job opportunities in aerospace would be much more easy to find in Germany compared to USA, however still difficult in itself. Fourthly, the STEM based projects and clubs would give me exposure to working in this sector.

Please help me come to a decision about which path to follow

Genuine question: is TUM actually worth it compared to other German universities?

In the U.S., top universities like Harvard or Yale clearly give you a huge advantage because the name itself opens doors. But in Germany, even TUM doesn’t seem to have that kind of impact outside academia. Most rankings are research-based anyway, not about teaching quality or student life.

At the same time, TUM is known for brutal exams and a very stressful workload. So if the career payoff isn’t massively better, why not study somewhere slightly easier like HM or Passau and focus more on internships, networking, and practical experience instead?

I get that TUM has ambitious students and a strong network, but can’t you build similar connections through internships, events, clubs, etc. without going through the pressure cooker itself?

Honestly curious what people think.

Thank in advance 🙂‍↕️.

Hey everyone,

I’m a recent TUM Informatics graduate, and I’m excited to share a project my team (mostly TUM students and alumni) has been building.

We are launching Venued, a platform designed for students and young professionals to connect through events. We built it because we were tired of missing out on concerts or festivals just because our friends were busy or we didn't have anyone to go with.

You can check it out and join the waitlist here: venued.eu

Instagram: @venued.eu

Who knows? You might just meet some like-minded people for your next event!

POLIMI vs TUM

Hello, which program is better between
- MSc Aeronautical engineering PoliMI
- MSc aerospace TUM
my dream would be to work into the aeronautical sector or F1 as aerodynamist, while i dislike satellites and orbits. i've read that the TUM programme has so many electives in aerosapce and aerodynamics.

What do you think? thanks in advance

Hey everyone,

I’m applying to the BSc in Aerospace Engineering this Winter Semester, and I’d really appreciate some insight from people who’ve gone through the aptitude assessment process (especially the interview stage).

My situation:

  • I already have all required documents ready:
    • VPD from uni-assist
    • CV
    • motivation letter
    • passport
    • German A2
    • Some strong recommendation letters from the uni professors i met.
  • I also completed the 8-week pre-study internship (Development + Operations), fully documented
  • I’ve done 1 year of Informatics Engineering in Argentina, to cover the requirement to skip Studienkolleg

My score (based on TUM formulas):

Using the official weighting system (HZB + subject grades + bonus), I consistently land around:

➡️ 80–82 / 100

From what I understand:

  • ≥ 80 → direct admission
  • 73–79 → interview (stage 2)
  • but I’ve also seen cases where even borderline 80 gets pushed to interview depending on subject evaluation

So I’m kind of in that “edge of direct admission” zone, which is why I’m preparing for the interview just in case.

(I’m attaching a screenshot of my VPD grades for context.)

My questions:

1. Realistically, do you think I’ll get an interview?

For those who applied:

  • If you were around 80–82, did you get direct admission or still get called?
  • How strict is TUM with the cutoff in practice?

2. How hard is the Aerospace aptitude interview?

I’ve read it’s about:

  • motivation
  • basic understanding of math/physics
  • ability to think like an engineer

But I’d really like to know:

  • How technical does it get?
  • Is it more conceptual or calculation-based?
  • Do they go deep into physics (mechanics, thermodynamics, etc.)?

3. If you had the interview, how was it?

  • What was the structure like?
  • How long did it last?
  • Was it more like a conversation or more like an exam?

4. What should I study to prepare properly?

This is the part I care about most.

Given my background (informatics → moving into aerospace), what would you recommend?

For example:

  • specific topics (mechanics? calculus? basic aerodynamics?)
  • any courses / YouTube playlists / textbooks
  • level of depth expected

5. Does my background help or hurt?

I come from (VDP also limited):

  • Informatics Engineering (1 year)
  • internship in data systems / pipelines / applied ML

Do they see this as:

  • a plus (systems thinking, programming, etc.) or
  • a gap (lack of classical physics/mechanics)?

I have two degrees on my radar that i want to study. Management And Technology Bachelor and Aerospace Bachelor. However main difference is difficulty and campus.

My questions:

  1. Difficulty: Is Management And Technology easier in terms of study time required to pass the exams compared to Aerospace Bachelor? Or the difficulty and time spent on education is same? I value my free time and balanced life as well haha:)
  2. Campus: Which campus is better in terms of student life ? Events, places to go, bars, access to gym, sports e.t.c I read couple of bad things about Garching in this forum.
  3. Can you apply for software developer jobs after graduating Management And Technology Bachelor?
  4. How is your experience as an engineer student or as Management And Technology student? Do you feel like you spend your time balanced going out to events, gym e.t.c or mostly study for exams throughout the semester?

I want to be honest. I am interested in both degrees. However, I really want to travel, go out with people and just experience a new city and culture maybe work small time jobs. I even learned German C2 level for this:) Live the student life I guess. I really value this when I come to Munich. However, I do know TUM is a hard university and I want to be realistic as well. I can also see my self studying consisteny throughout semester and traveling in holiday.

I really don't care about prestige and I definitely dont want to become Elon Musk and make tons of money hahaha:) I simply want to come to a big city, have a student life and also have a good education on something that I find interesting. Thank you for your help.

Hello!

If your are currently majoring in this, I would greatly appreciate if you could give me some insight

im mainly interested into this major are TUM because a) its TUM b) i like the management part c) i like the billingual part as my english is probably even better than my german lol.

I am a student at an overseas german school, and will very soon have to apply for uni. For my strengths and weaknesses imma be blunt and direct.

Strengths: strong leadership, high EQ, willing to put in hard work, strong interest and family background in management and very high leadership positions

Weaknesses: procrastinates, not the BEST at maths but genuinely also not that bad, definitely less gifted in science compared to language/arts/history/etc.

im estimating my final Abi-Grade to be around 1.4-1.7

  1. I did some research and saw that i should be able to get in around a grade of 1.5 (german system). If you didnt get in directly and had the interview, what was it like for you? ive heard they could ask maths questions on the spot and that would be a nightmare for me as i would need time
  2. How busy are you? do you have enough free time?
  3. How stressful is it compared to highschool/oberstufe?
  4. considering my grades in highschool have been between 1.3 - 1.8, i usually have very good to good grades, should i expect this to be much harder? as in should i expect to put in a lot more effort?
  5. is it possible if you could share a screenshot of your schedule?
  6. how is your general experience? could you tell me a bit about it?

Im thinking if i should choose this major since it also has a technology part, which might be an advantage but im not sure if it would be too muchit. Im mainly more interested in the economics part and managemnt, but i dont wanna be "boring" and just choose BWL .

Thank you for your time! even a short comment is greatly appreciated

Hey zusammen, kurze Frage bzg meiner Masterarbeit

Besonders interessieren mich eure Erfahrungen.

TUM allows the use of Grammarly while writing a Master’s thesis, and they even provide a subscription. I write all the analyses and content completely by myself. I only sometimes use Grammarly’s “formal” rephrase feature because I don’t always like how academic my own sentences sound.

The issue is that after rephrasing, the text becomes much more academic/formal. When I check it with AI detectors like GPTZero, it sometimes shows around 10% AI-generated. Do you think this could be a problem? How did you handle this while writing your thesis?

I am already really struggling with Introduction to Software Engineering. My other option would be Fundamentals of Databases. I know the course is in German, but that would not be a problem for me.
What do you think? Would Fundamentals of Databases be more manageable than Introduction to Software Engineering? I am willing to study hard but honestly I only see myself failing introduction to software engineering as I have a management background.

Thank you so much in advance!
