Update: Elusive coolant leak issue

I think I found it, but it was too late. Since we were not able to find the coolant leak and we have a summer road trip planned which involves towing a trailer, we decided it was time for the Sequoia to go.

We bought the vehicle used about 9 years ago and started to have issues with it from the start. First a radiator leak, then the water pump went out, which caused a crack in the head so we put in a crate engine. This latest issue caused us to lose faith in the vehicle and we didn’t want to be stranded on vacation this summer.

About an hour before heading out to take the Sequoia across the state to trade it in for a new pickup, I opened the hood to add yet more coolant. At this point I’ve added about a half gallon over the space of 2-3 weeks, so we were hoping and praying that we would arrive without issues. I decided to do one more look over the engine. Lo and behold, I spotted a very small pool of coolant and on the top of the engine right next to the water inlet housing assembly.

Since we had only been driving the Sequoia on short trips it wasn’t getting up to temperature often or for very long, the coolant and able to pool up. I noticed a faint amount of pink crustys at the point where the housing goes into the block.

What I think was happening is the leak was only occurring when the engine was cold/cool and the thermostat had not yet opened up. Since the thermostat was not open, pressure on that side of it was enough for coolant to leak out from the o-ring, but once it was hot and the thermostat was open everything flowed smoothly. This made sense to me because it seemed to go through more coolant on the short trips than the long ones.

Further evidence to support my hypothesis, on the trip across the state, we stopped at a rest stop and I check the coolant level in the reservoir. It was above the cold full line and nothing was as coming from the suspected location.

Hopefully my experience helps someone else in the future to find their own elusive coolant leak.

Scored a killer deal on some pro wheels and running boards. Swipe for upgrades:

It came with a Trd roof rack but it was loud AF and I kind of like the look without it.

Let me know what you think!

Really hard to capture this sound… what is it?

I only hear it in lower speeds… May be up to 40 max? I don’t hear it when I turn on the vehicle or it’s sitting in park… I also don’t hear it when I put the vehicle in neutral and rev the engine… 2018 Toyota Sequoia with 63,000 miles… All fluids are in good shape no leaks at all.

2001 Sequoia - possible to swap 2nd row bench for captain seats + rear center console?

Hey all, I've got a 2001 Sequoia with the 2nd row bench seat - I've been looking around to see if the captain's chairs and rear center console from the 05-07 luxury package are a direct drop-in swap or if anything needs to be modified?

If this has been asked in here before, my apologies - it's just been weirdly hard to find information online about this, as a lot of older forum posts are starting to become inaccessible these days thanks to link rot...

Running boards…

One of the first things I see people do is remove their running boards. I’d love to remove mine but I’m short and they help me into the tree, so what are some more aesthetically pleasing options y’all are using?

Toyota sequoia electrical issue

2011 Toyota sequoia 4.6 v8

I’ve been trying to figure out what else I have to do with my car after I replaced the secondary injection air pumps in bank 1 and 2 and is still giving a code of p2240 even after I replaced the SAIS pumps and installed a Hewitt-tech bypass kit, this car only has 170,000 miles of that means anything but I would like to fix this, any ideas or troubleshooting I can do to get in the right direction of fixing this issue? I’m willing to post pictures or give more details if needed. Thank you In advance

Transmission issues

Well I made a post here a week ago about all these codes popping up on my sequoia and bam transmission is condemned!!! I’m getting set back like 5200 to fix it all 4000 just for the transmission and 1200 for the labor. Happened at 205000 miles and I got this baby at 78k. Make sure you guys take care of that tranny I should’ve traded it in after I got rear ended last year but oh well still a reliable vehicle.

Have 07 Sequoia painted?

Hi all, my 2007 Sequoia has a ton of rock chips and faded clear coat on the roof and currently has 240k miles.

I’m considering having it repainted, but I’m not sure if it’s worth the trouble. It would cost about $1,500. I understand it’s subjective, but what I’m curious about is whether it’s worth it based on how much longer the vehicle will last, or if I decide to sell it in the near future, whether I’d recover some of that cost.

Maybe there are other alternatives to fixing this? I like the truck I just really dislike how unkept it looks. I bought it this way last year, and have tons of maintenance records for it, so i know mechanically it is sound.

1st gen rear air riding low

Just picked this up. Over speed bumps, it felt like it would hit the bump stops. The air bags and shocks look relatively new which matches the carfax history of about 2024 for rear suspension work. There’s no hissing and the adjuster seems to work. I’m wondering if it’s been miscalibrated or if there’s a way to calibrate it. I’ll go coils eventually but I want to stretch the stock setup for a couple years if I can. Sorry if this has been discussed - couldn’t find much. Prior Jeep guy who joined the dark side 👋

Edit: maybe someone can post a pic of their bump stop clearance? Would be really helpful!

2011 Toyota Sequoia - Headlight Assembly w/Washer

My mother has a 2011 Toyota Sequoia Platinum (5.7L V8 Flex Fuel) that I am needing to replace the headlight assemblies on. Unfortunately, I did not realize that this model had headlight washers, and the ones I ordered do NOT support those. And, I am having a devil of a time trying to find ones that DO support the headlight washers.

Is there a different OEM part number for those that have support for the headlight washers? Or, does anyone have a link to a set that would work?

This vehicle does not have the manual leveling adjuster, so that's not an issue.

Also, these headlight washers do not seem to be working at all anyways, and she wasn't even aware of them, so never used them. Would it be a problem to just disconnect them / bypass them?

2007 JBA header install - I feel so defeated

I took a week off work to take my time and do it right.

Ended up taking me close to 5 days for a variety of reasons. The 2005-2007 models seem to be specifically challenging due to the air injection system taking up more room in an already tight space.

Anyway, I got OEM manifolds off and cleaned the heads as best as I could. They felt smooth to the touch across the mating surfaces.

I bought and installed OEM Toyota gaskets.

I installed the headers and had a few heat cycles on them when I began to hear them leak a bit. I then spent the next day retorquing the nuts. They were all tight still. A couple got MAYBE 1/4 turn out of them.

The next day, the sound is gone on my way to work. I start the truck up to go home for lunch and I can very clearly hear an exhaust leak.

It's devastating.... the gaskets were crazy expensive, I did everything I could to make sure it sealed properly. I followed all the advice and all the instructions... and now the idea of having to remove one of the headers and redo a VERY expensive gasket is... well its fucking defeating man... I'm not sure what to do.
