What did your parents buy their house for back in the day?

My parents bought their first house in the 1970s for 20k in Hawthorne, then the market went really high they sold it made double and bought their home in TO for 82k. This makes me laugh and feel depressed at the same time lol. I don’t know when I’ll be able to afford a house here!

Vote in mock Governor's election using Ranked Choice Voting!

Hi, Voters!

Please take a moment and vote in our Ventura County-wide mock Governor's election using RCV!

A traditional election requires you to choose a single candidate and hope for the best. In a crowded field, as in this year's election, voters have to choose between voting for candidates they believe in and voting for those they think are likely to survive the primary and advance to the general. Vote splitting is on everyone's mind, and voters, Democrat and Republican alike, are struggling to choose which candidate to support in hopes that their choice makes the final two.

And, of course, Independent and Third-Party candidates are entirely left out of the process and labeled as a "throw-away" vote. (Sorry, largest block of voters who are registered as Independents. No soup for you!)

With Ranked Choice Voting, we could eliminate primaries and two-round runoff formats altogether and have a single, high-turnout November election with many candidates from across the political spectrum. Voters could vote for their preference, and constituents would get consensus winners.

No more strategic voting, no more vote splitting, no more lesser of two evils.

All candidates in this election are still in the race and were polling at or above 1% support in recent polls.

Have fun! Results will be released after the polls close on June 2nd!

What makes Lang Ranch Elementary so special?

I know it’s ranked a 10 but someone said it was the culture there that makes it a great school. Can someone elaborate?

"A Ventura County man was charged with trafficking a 14-year-old boy who had been reported missing by family members.

Brandon Holguin, 26, of Thousand Oaks, reportedly targeted the boy at a thrift store about four to six months before the incident, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said.

From May 2-5, 2025, Holguin is accused of trafficking the boy from a location near his home in north L.A. County to several other locations. He allegedly took the boy’s cell phone and jewelry and sold the items to collect hundreds of dollars in cash. He then took the boy to a motel and put him to work sorting and photographing used clothing items for online resale, prosecutors said.

He also reportedly forced the boy to ingest Adderall so that he would continue working late into the night to finish his work.

Holguin initially planned to transport the boy to Northern California, but after those plans fell through, authorities said he abandoned the boy on the side of an L.A. freeway in the middle of the night.

The suspect drove away with all the proceeds gained from selling the victim’s belongings. The boy managed to safely walk off the freeway and call the authorities for help.

His family and local law enforcement had been searching for the missing boy since his disappearance.

. . .

Anyone who may have been a victim or has additional information about Holguin is urged to call Detective Salvador Ponce at 818-236-4015.

Anonymous tips can be provided to L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at lacrimestoppers.org.

Anyone who may be a victim of human trafficking or know someone who is can call the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888 or text 233-733 (Be Free)." - KTLA 5 News

Your favorite gym in the area?

I used to go to Anytime Fitness in Newbury, then switched to Equinox in Westlake and loved it. But it just felt way too pricey for what they offered, then I switched over to Golds/EŌS fitness in TO.

I loved it when it was Golds Gym, but now the vibe has changed. The staff feels very meh, it doesn’t have that Golds Gym vibe anymore and I can’t even get their app to work to check in and it’s been months. So far a very disappointing experience.

The only reason I keep it is because of the Sauna and Massage chairs. I don’t think any of the gyms have this? Even Equinox only had a steam room.

What’s your favorite gym? I think I’m willing to give up the sauna if the vibe of the gym felt better and the staff was actually great.

Thank you

Veterinary Recommendations

I recently moved to the area with my four cats. One has been terribly ill with what was originally assumed to be an upper respiratory infection and I've not had a great experience with the vet office I picked. I know there are a lot of vets in the area. Can anyone give a recommendation for a veterinary clinic that is going to be attentive and knowledgeable? I feel terrible for my cat who has been getting worse every day.

Burglary suspects arrested for stealing $100K in valuables from Thousand Oaks home

"Four men were arrested for burglarizing a Thousand Oaks home on May 5 and making off with more than $100,000 in valuables, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday.

On the day of the burglary, one of the victims returned home around 10 a.m. to find their house ransacked, the sheriff’s office said. Numerous items were reported stolen from the home.

VCSO detectives and authorities with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office and the California Highway Patrol responded to the immediate area to search for the burglary suspects. A short time later, a CHP officer spotted a vehicle associated with the burglary in the Calabasas area and attempted to pull the car over.

'The vehicle failed to yield, and a brief pursuit was initiated by CHP officers,' VCSO said.

Three suspects bailed from the car and attempted to get away on foot. All three suspects, 41-year-old Javier Ricardo Pulido Ramirez of Los Angeles, 39-year-old Diego Fernando Paipilla Cuervo of Los Angeles, and 35-year-old Jesus Miguel Velez Hernandez of Simi Valley, were found and arrested.

During the investigation, authorities learned of a fourth burglary suspect in a different vehicle. The fourth suspect, 27-year-old L.A. resident Sergio Alejandro Paez Cuervo, was also found and arrested.

'A search of the suspect vehicles yielded the victim’s property and additional evidence further linking the suspects to the burglary in Thousand Oaks,' VCSO said.

All four suspects were booked into the Ventura County Jail on residential burglary and conspiracy charges. They are being held on $500,000 bail.

Detectives are working with neighboring law enforcement agencies to potentially connect the suspects to additional crimes.

'As a reminder, residential burglars tend to target unoccupied residences, often those which back up to open spaces such as hiking trails and golf courses,' the sheriff’s office said.

**The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office provided the following list of tips to avoid becoming a burglary target:**

- Leave indoor lights and/or televisions on during the evening hours to give the appearance the house is occupied.

- Close and lock all windows and doors when leaving the house.

- Activate alarm systems when leaving the house. Even if you only plan on being away for a brief period. Consider having your alarm company list Sheriff’s Dispatch as its first contact on an alarm activation.

- Alarm systems should consist of door sensors, window sensors and glass break sensors for all windows and doors on the first and second story of the house.

- Safes have been specifically targeted during these burglaries. Consider storing valuables in safe deposit boxes or other secure locations.

- Report any suspicious vehicles or individuals immediately … Pay particular attention to vehicles that drive slowly up and down residential streets, and vehicles parked adjacent to hiking trails or golf course access points during hours that are not consistent with hiking or golfing." - KTLA 5 News

Storage unit lost with childhood home videos

This is a long shot but back in February my girlfriend’s mom had a storage unit at “Hello storage” in Thousand Oaks off of willow street and well, long story short, the storage unit was being paid for by moms boyfriend and he stopped paying and said nothing, so the unit was auctioned off without anyone else’s knowledge… inside that unit was childhood home videos, clothes, paintings, etc… fast forward to now, my girlfriend is devastated that she will never see her childhood memories again and I thought maybe by a slim chance the buyer could be on here somewhere with the home videos… I know long shot…

I Call Bullshit: The Cognitive Dissonance of Jeff Gorell’s "Environmentalism"

On Earth Day, Ventura County Supervisor Jeff Gorell wrapped himself in the green flag, posting a list of environmental commitments that would make you think he’s a climate warrior. But here is the hard truth: Jeff Gorell is a Republican who has consistently aligned himself with a national platform that is currently executing the most aggressive assault on our environment in American history, and most of the policies coming out of the current administration affect us right here in the Ventura County. Regardless of his local posturing, Gorell is part of a party gone rouge that is not interested in conserving our land; they are interested in extracting from it, deregulating it, and paving it over. “Conservatives” my ass.

"Ventura County residents are being warned about a recent increase in catalytic converter thefts across the county.

'In the past few months, there have been over 50 reported thefts of catalytic converters in most cities and various unincorporated areas within the county,' the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office said in a Community Alert issued Wednesday.

Most of the thefts have occurred during the late-night and early-morning hours, often targeting vehicles parked on streets and in driveways, officials said.

Surveillance footage has revealed the following information to investigators:

- Suspects typically work in pairs or small groups

- They often use two vehicles

- The thefts are carried out in less than two minutes

- Suspects acting as lookouts may be armed

'Due to the potential risk, citizens are urged not to approach or confront the suspects,' the Sheriff’s Office said.

Anyone who sees suspicious activity is urged to report it by calling 911 or by contacting their local law enforcement agency’s non-emergency number, depending on the urgency of the situation.

Residents are encouraged to take the following steps to reduce the risk of becoming a victim:

- Remain aware of your surroundings

- Park vehicles in well-lit areas or inside a garage when possible

- Install motion-activated lighting and security cameras

- Consider installing a catalytic converter anti-theft device

- Etch your vehicle identification number, VIN, onto the converter

- Activate vehicle alarms

Anyone with information about the recent thefts is asked to call the Ventura County Organized Retail Theft Task Force’s recorded tip line at 805-383-8703. Tips may also be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477." - KTLA 5 News

Free Spaces for teens

The mall is really boring and to be real my friends and i only go there on tuesday or wednesday for the discount movies. But I want free things to do on the weekends too, maybe like an abandoned house to hike too, fun trails or hangouts in the woods, i know there used to be a couch somewhere in wildwood or maybe even portrero. I also know there was a make shift bike park along the 23 on the other side of the soccer fields, and where’s the waterfall people swim in? is that paradise falls?
